Mobile Broadband Guide – Useful Things To Know About Mobile Internet

Until a few years ago, internet access was restricted to the home or office using fixed line broadband. Thanks to developments in technology, the age of accessing broadband internet services virtually anywhere, is well and truly here. Mobile internet services work by using 3G (third generation) mobile networks for data transfer, enabling access to the internet using handheld smartphones, laptops, or tablets anywhere that good mobile broadband coverage is available.

3G and 4G networking standards

Around every ten years, a new generation of mobile communications becomes available, usually facilitating higher bandwidths and data transfer rates than the previous generation. 3G, which became available around the turn of the millennium, is the first communication standard to allow mobile internet access. It has limitations, in terms of sometimes unreliable and slow connections, whilst the networks can become very clogged at peak times, making it an often frustrating way of using the internet.

The 1st Generation of mobile communications was introduced in 1980, with data transfer speeds of around 2.4 Kilobits per second. Two decades later 3G was introduced, allowing speeds of up to 2Mbps, some 800 times faster than 1G. We are now on the cusp of seeing 4th Generation standards being adopted, which are likely to give speeds of up to 10Mbps. This is around 4,000 times faster than 1G and will allow fast access to content such as High Definition videos, helping users of tablets and smartphones make the most of their devices.
Some countries are already adopting 4G mobile broadband, with the US, Germany and Norway being on track to deliver the latest generation, also known as LTE (Long Term Evolution). In the UK, mobile network operators will begin competitive bidding on the spectrum necessary to operate 4G services in 2012. It is likely to take some time after the spectrum auction until 4G mobile broadband actually becomes available however.

Mobile Broadband Coverage

To be able to use mobile broadband services, a good 3G network signal is required. The first step in assessing whether mobile broadband is usable in a particular area is to check network coverage. All of the major UK network providers supply postcode checkers on their websites, enabling potential customers to find out whether they can receive a good 3G signal in their area, before they buy. In the UK, it is estimated that just under 90% of the country has access to a good 3G signal, but some rural areas have very little coverage, meaning mobile broadband is not a viable option for some people.

3G Network Coverage – the Telecoms regulator in the UK, Ofcom, estimates that 87% of the UK has mobile broadband coverage. Parts of Scotland, Wales and rural England cannot access mobile internet due to a lack of 3G coverage in more remote areas.

Ways to improve Mobile Broadband Coverage

One of the ways to improve your mobile broadband experience is to buy a 3G signal booster. There are various types of antenna on the market, designed to give a stronger 3G signal. From clip-on units which fit onto the edge of a laptop screen, to dongle antennas and external pole mounted units, these are relatively inexpensive, and known to improve weak signals.

One of the other ways of getting a better mobile internet experience is to use the service outside of peak times. This may sound obvious, but between 6pm and 11pm, the networks are frequently overloaded as this is when most people are trying to access mobile broadband services. At peak times voice users also get priority over data users (i.e. those trying to use mobile internet on the same network), meaning services are slowed down even more. Trying to surf outside of the peak usage times will lead to a much smoother and more satisfying mobile internet experience.

Methods of using Mobile Broadband

The explosion in popularity of smartphones and tablet computers has increased demand for mobile internet services hugely. There are now several different ways of using the internet over a mobile connection. From USB dongles which plug into the side of a laptop, to micro SIM cards that fit into an iPad, most of the UK network providers offer different ways to use mobile broadband. Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

In the latest internet news, everyone has been talking about the opening of ElderScrollV.com in anticipation of the latest installment of Elder Scrolls RPG series, “Skyrim”.

RPG’s (or Role-playing games) have gained popularity over the last two decades and the market or range of people you can find playing these games has never been so large and continues to grow everyday. These types of games allow the person playing the game to take on a different persona, hence the term “Role playing”. Players will assume the role of a custom made Avatar in the Skyrim world and act out in whatever manner the player chooses. The concepts are based on the randomness of dice rolls as most RPG’s have been based on since pen and paper creations – but the quality of content and gameplay gets more and more in-depth as we will see playing Bethesda’s latest game title.

Skyrim is a first and third person role-playing game due to be released on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and for PC. The world takes place in a Snowy region called Tamriel and is one of the most non-linear games we have ever seen. There is no set path – the path you take in the game is what you make for yourself. Evildoer or do-gooder – the world Skyrim has something to offer everyone. The game is both aesthetically pleasing as it is just downright fun-to-play and we would expect nothing else from the team of extremely talented developers at Bethesda.

Bethesda has recently been involved in many major recent title releases such as Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion. They are also responsible for all of Skyrim’s previous installments including Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind, Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, and Elder Scrolls Arena.

Skyrim will take various elements from its predecessor such as the Radiant AI system to make something bigger and better – a new game mechanic called Radiant Story. Radiant AI was a system to make NPC’s (Non player characters) encountered during the game seem more life like – reacting to hunger by eating, boredom by reading or drinking, ect.

Radiant Story is designed to make an entirely dynamic gameplay experience unique to each individual and will allow for greater replayability. The world will evolve or devolve based on the actions the player takes through the game. An entire town can crumble if the player interferes with the town’s economy or resources. Or, oppositely the town may prosper and become wealthy and successful if aided by the player.

Random dragon encounter abound the adventure and will be a primary side adventure to pursue skills named, “Dragon Shouts” as the avatar played by the player dominates the dragons throughout the adventure. These shouts are said to give a unique set of powers to the player unlike anything we’ve seen before and will be key if the player wants to become a very powerful avatar.

Not all of the dragons encountered are hostile according to rumors. Expect some friendly encounters and maybe even a little help from these giant scaled monstrosities. Rumors have also gotten out that the player may even encounter multiple dragons at once given the right instance – and all such encounters are expected to be completely random.

Improvements in gameplay are also to be expected. Interviews with Executive producer Todd Howard made mention that the sneak skills, dragon shouts, ranged weapons, and spell casting will all see significant improvements – tailoring the game to more than just the “hack and slash” crowd. While sneaking the player can expect to get one hit kills with a well placed backstab, or one hit kills with a well aimed arrow. Developers wanted some element of realism stating, “If a player can get that close to someone while sneaking, they ought to be able to deliver a very punishing blow.”

Other improvements besides the game mechanics include a beautiful world that will run on Bethesda’s brand new “Creation” engine. Many critics thought our current generation platforms wouldn’t have enough horsepower to play the title – that they would have to “dumb down” the graphics to a much less acceptable level.

The critics were incorrect.

As seen in the E3 Gameplay demo, the graphics run smoothly on our current gen console systems, proving that there is still plenty of life left in these now aging systems. Computer hardware enthusiasts may have the upper hand though with the latest and greatest computer and the ability to tweak the games graphics – but not without a cost. Many fans anticipating the release of the game have mentioned they are willing to invest upwards $1000 in new computers and equipment to enjoy the game to it’s fullest. The PC version is also expected to have modification available to add further content onto the already content infested 300+ hour campaign (as described by Bethesda developers).

Pros and Cons of Part-Time Forex Trading

Forex trading is a wonderful opportunity to go into investment with less capital than most traditional markets require. What this means though is that many people who are interested in trading Forex will be doing so in the framework of another life—a life which may include a part time or full time job and additional responsibilities. It is not recommended that you quit your current job to start Forex trading, unless you are sitting on so much capital already that you can live off of your savings for a long time. Trying to make a living on FX alone in the beginning stages carries many fallbacks, dooming many traders who might have been successful otherwise.

It is tempting to think that the cons of part-time Forex trading outweigh the pros. After all, if you trade Forex full time, then you can concentrate 100% of your time to the market. When you trade part-time, you may lose out on a lot of trading opportunities. It’s rough to have to trade overnight (when the markets are most active in some parts of the world) and then wake up in the morning and go to a “real job” after all. It’s difficult to trade at work, and often times impossible. That leaves a fairly small number of hours in which to trade. Of course, you might be able to get around this by taking long term trades, but if that isn’t your style, you’re going to struggle to place interday and intraday trades in between work hours, and get out of them in time.

That sounds like a lot of cons, doesn’t it? Consider though that if you trade full time and you don’t have another source of income, you will need to make enough on your trades to pay your rent and bills. This means withdrawing constantly from your Forex account, so you may have a hard time moving forward. It also means that while you may be able to dedicate 100% of your time to Forex trading, you won’t be able to dedicate 100% of your attention. This is again assuming you aren’t sitting on a pile of savings. If indeed you aren’t, you may feel worried each month about how you’re going to pay the bills. Injecting worry and pressure into trading causes bad trading decisions in most cases. This is a hard enough business to succeed in without compromising your trades with a perpetual state of fear.

So how can you integrate trading into your life if you can only trade part time?

This used to be quite a quandary, and it’s still difficult to manage, but thanks to the growth of mobile technology it should soon be getting easier to manage your trades while you’re away from home. While you may not have access to a computer at work, or may not be able to use the company computer to trade, if you bring a mobile device to work, you may be able to use it to trade. More and more FX brokers are giving traders the ability to access their full platform via mobile, complete with all the rich features of their desktop platform. This means that many more people will be able to receive alerts and place trades while at work.

Supposing your job still doesn’t let you do this? In this case, if possible, try to find a job where you can do both at once, or find a way to make up for the loss of trading opportunities. You may be able to do this by choosing a new timeframe, or by looking at more currencies. If you only see a perfect trade line up twice a month on one currency, you may find two opportunities a week instead by looking at eight currencies.

Balancing part-time FX trading with another job can be a real hassle, but unless you have a lot of capital both to live on and trade with, it probably would be to your detriment to try to make a living off of your foreign exchange brokers in the beginning. Making a living off of FX is a responsible and worthwhile goal to aim for though. It’s a meaningful goal and may motivate you more than just “I want to make a million dollars.” So aim for that goal and keep working, and keep trading!
